「原級」・「比較級」に続き「最上級」を利用した慣用表現について紹介する。
・John is the second oldest son in his family.
（ジョンは、家族で２番目の息子である。）
・Kumi can run the third fastest in the world.
（クミは、世界で３番目に早く走ることができる。）
・I am the last person to lose this game.
（私は、このゲームに最も負けそうにない人である。）
・This is the last town that I want to leave.
（この町は、私が最も離れたくない町である。）
・ I tried to make the most of my time.
（できる限り、自分の時間を最大限に活用しようとした。）
・Make the best of this situation.
（この状況を最大限に活用しなさい。）
※「make the most of ~」と「make the best of ~」の違いは、「make the best of ~」がマイナスの状況下において表現する。一方で、「make the most of~」は、一般的な状況下においても表現することができる。
