比較の強調表現について知ろう！

比較の強調表現は、単に「〜より大きい」というだけでなく、「はるかに大きい」「ずっと速い」のように、その差の大きさを強調したい時に使われます。英語では、特定の副詞やフレーズを比較級の前に置くことでこれを表現します。

比較の強調表現

比較級を強調する主な表現は以下の通りです。

1. 差が大きいことを強調する場合

「はるかに」「ずっと」「かなり」といった意味合いで、大きな差を強調します。

• much
  • 例: He is much taller than his brother. (彼は兄よりはるかに背が高い。)
• far
  • 例: This car is far more expensive than that one. (この車はあの車よりずっと高価だ。)
• a lot
  • 例: She runs a lot faster than her teammates. (彼女はチームメイトよりかなり速く走る。)
• by far (最上級も強調できますが、比較級でも使われます)
  • 例: This is by far better than the old version. (これは旧バージョンより断然良い。)
• even

• a great deal

2. 差が小さいことを強調する場合

「少し」「わずかに」といった意味合いで、わずかな差を強調します。

• by far

• quite

強調表現を使う際のポイント

• 比較級の前に置く: 強調したい副詞は、比較級の直前、または more や less の直前に置きます。
• 意味合いを使い分ける: 強調表現によって、「はるかに」なのか「少し」なのか、その程度が異なります。伝えたいニュアンスに合わせて選びましょう。
• very は使わない: 比較級や最上級を very で直接強調することはできません。（例: very taller は間違いです。）very は原級を強調する際に使います。（例: very tall）

コロケーションを確認しよう

どの強調語がどんな比較級とよく一緒に使われるか、具体的な例を交えて見ていきましょう。

比較の強調表現のコロケーション

比較級を修飾する言葉は、比較級の直前に置くのが基本です。

1. 大きな差を強調するコロケーション

much + 比較級 最も一般的で、幅広い状況で使えます。

• much taller: はるかに背が高い
  • Example: He is much taller than his younger brother. (彼は弟よりはるかに背が高い。)
• much faster: はるかに速い
  • Example: Our new car is much faster than the old one. (私たちの新しい車は古いものよりはるかに速い。)

• far more expensive: はるかに高価な

a lot + 比較級 口語的で、much とほぼ同じ意味で使われます。

• a lot easier: ずっと簡単だ

• a lot colder: ずっと寒い
  • Example: It’s a lot colder here than in Tokyo today. (今日は東京よりこっちの方がずっと寒い。)

even + 比較級 予想や期待を超えて「さらに」という強調を表します。

• even bigger: さらに大きい

2. 小さな差を強調するコロケーション

a little + 比較級 最も一般的な「少しだけ」「わずかに」という強調です。

• a little bit cheaper: 少しだけ安い

• slightly taller: わずかに背が高い

3. 具体的な差を示すコロケーション

比較級の前に具体的な数値や量を置くことで、どれだけの差があるかを示します。

• two meters taller: 2メートル背が高い

• three times faster: 3倍速い

< many (much) more + 名詞 >　を用いた表現について

「many」や「much」を用いて、「ずっと多くの名詞である。」として表現することができる。

※可算名詞に「many」をつける場合は、数が多いことを表現する。

比較級には＜比較級＋than~＞の基本的な型がある。

「less」を使った比較

「less」は「～より少ない」など程度が低かったり少なかったりすることを比較する場合に用いる。
